FoodSaver Handheld+ 2-in-1 Review: Great Handheld, Few Modes

FoodSaver Handheld+ 2-in-1 Vacuum Sealing System with cordless handheld sealer docked in the countertop unit
★ Bottom Line

The Handheld+ 2-in-1 makes sense for kitchens that reseal zipper bags, containers and wine most days and still want a heat sealer for the freezer in the same footprint. Its detachable cordless handheld, rated by FoodSaver for up to 35 quart bags per charge, is something no dedicated countertop sealer in its price range offers. The trade-offs are a countertop half with no moist or gentle setting, a price above better-equipped sealers, and scattered buyer reports of latch and sealing faults.

Pros

  • Detachable cordless handheld, no hose
  • Up to 35 quart bags per charge (FoodSaver rating)
  • 12-minute marinate cycle
  • Dishwasher-safe drip tray
  • Compact enough for a cabinet
  • 5-year limited warranty

Cons

  • No gentle or moist-food setting
  • Costs more than better-equipped countertop sealers
  • Scattered buyer reports of latch and seal faults

Overview

Most vacuum sealers make you pick one job: a countertop machine for heat-sealed freezer bags, or a small battery pump for zipper bags and containers. The FoodSaver Handheld+ 2-in-1 Vacuum Sealing System puts both in one box. The base is a countertop vacuum and heat sealer for FoodSaver bags and rolls, and a cordless handheld unit lifts out of it to pull the air from zipper bags, containers, jars and wine bottles. FoodSaver launched it in October 2024, and it sells on Amazon.com.

FoodSaver calls it the only vacuum sealing system with a detachable cordless handheld, and that is the real difference from its own VS3130 and similar models, which keep the handheld tethered to the base by a retractable hose. The compromise sits in the countertop half. Independent testers found fewer settings than on similarly priced sealers, and no gentle option for soft or crumbly food.

FoodSaver Handheld+ 2-in-1 Sealing Performance

The countertop half works like any FoodSaver heat sealer. You lay the open end of a FoodSaver bag in the channel, close the lid, and the Vacuum & Seal button pulls the air out and fuses the seam. CNN Underscored included it in its vacuum sealer testing and liked the detachable handheld, but kept FoodSaver’s VS3130 as its top pick, saying its reviewer preferred that model’s control panel and interface. Taste of Home also tested it and placed it among the models it tested but didn’t pick.

The gap is control over the vacuum. CNN Underscored lists three modes: vacuum and seal, seal only, and marinate. FoodSaver lists no moist-food or gentle setting, which the Potane, Nesco and Anova sealers in the table below all have, and Taste of Home’s testers found it can’t handle delicate foods without damaging them. That matters for bread, berries, soft fish or anything with a crumb, where full suction crushes the food before the seal fires. Firm cuts of meat, cheese blocks and portioned leftovers, which make up most freezer sealing, aren’t affected.

The Cordless Handheld and Marinate Mode

The handheld is the reason this machine exists. It lifts off the base, runs on its own rechargeable battery and charges again when you dock it, so there is no hose to attach and no need to work near an outlet. FoodSaver rates it at up to 35 zipper quart bags per charge. It works with FoodSaver’s valve zipper bags, Preserve & Marinate containers, jar sealers and bottle stoppers, which covers the everyday fridge and pantry jobs where a heat-sealed bag is overkill: an opened bag of coffee, half a block of cheese, a bottle of wine you didn’t finish.

Marinate mode also runs through the handheld and a FoodSaver marinating container, with a 12-minute cycle that FoodSaver pitches as minutes instead of hours in the fridge. For long freezer storage, the countertop sealer is still the tool to use: FoodSaver’s own guidance on its handheld-equipped models is heat-sealed bags for the freezer and the handheld for short-term fridge and pantry storage. Treat the handheld as a daily convenience, not a replacement for the heat seal.

Controls, Storage and Reliability

The countertop base keeps things simple, with a short row of buttons rather than the moist, pulse and sous vide settings of FoodSaver’s larger VS3130. It has a removable drip tray that goes in the dishwasher, built-in storage for a bag roll, and a matte finish that resists fingerprints. FoodSaver says it is small enough to store in a cabinet, pantry or drawer, and Taste of Home’s testers liked that it doesn’t cost you storage or counter space.

Build quality is where buyer feedback splits. On Walmart.com, where it has several hundred ratings, happy owners mention the compact size and freezer results. Individual reviews there also describe a side latch that pops open during a cycle, units that vacuum but only seal after a second press of the Seal button, and charging faults with the handheld. These are individual reports rather than a measured failure rate, and FoodSaver’s 5-year limited warranty is the backstop if yours turns out to be one of them.

How Does It Stack Up Against the Competition?

None of the three dedicated countertop sealers below has a cordless handheld, but each costs less at the time of writing and gives you more control over the vacuum.

Is the FoodSaver Handheld+ 2-in-1 Worth It?

Buy it if the handheld is the point. If you reseal zipper bags of cheese, deli meat and coffee most days, keep open wine around, or marinate often, the cordless unit will get daily use, and the countertop half covers the occasional freezer batch without a second machine in the cupboard. For steaks, chicken breasts and portioned leftovers, its three-mode panel is enough.

Look elsewhere if you mostly seal for the freezer or for sous vide. The Nesco VS-12 Deluxe adds moist, double-seal and gentle settings plus a built-in roll cutter, the Anova Precision Vacuum Sealer Pro adds moist and pulse control for wet foods and sous vide bags, and the Potane Precision, Taste of Home’s best overall pick, has soft and delicate modes for the foods this FoodSaver crushes, for much less money.
