How We Review Products
Our Research Process, Rating Criteria & Editorial Standards
Our Approach
Every review we publish follows the same structured research process — regardless of product category, price point, or brand. Our goal is a review that answers the questions a real buyer actually has: Does it do what it claims? Is it worth the money? What are the most common problems? How does it compare to the alternatives?
We achieve this by combining four research inputs: primary product research, aggregated user data, real-world context, and editorial oversight. All four inputs apply to every review.
The Four Research Inputs
1. Primary Product Research
We begin with a thorough survey of available product data: manufacturer specifications, official documentation, and retailer listings across both US and Canadian markets. We cross-reference specifications across sources and note discrepancies where found.
2. AI-Assisted User Data Analysis
We use AI tools to process large volumes of verified purchase reviews and identify patterns — common failure points, consistently praised strengths, use-case limitations — that a small editorial team could not surface manually. All AI outputs are reviewed by a human editor before influencing our conclusions.
3. Real-World Context
We aggregate first-person accounts from verified purchasers on Amazon and other major retail platforms, identifying patterns in real-world use — what works, what fails, and under what conditions. We do not conduct in-person product testing.
4. Editorial Integrity Check
No manufacturer, retailer, or advertiser influences our ratings or conclusions. Before publication, a human editor reviews the draft for factual accuracy, logical consistency, and completeness. Prices are sourced at research time — always verify current pricing on the retailer’s site before purchasing.
How We Score Products
We rate products on a 10-point scale. Scores reflect overall value to the target buyer — not a checkbox of features. A $49 air fryer that does exactly what a budget buyer needs can score higher than a $200 model that underdelivers on its premium promise.
Our scoring considers the following factors:
- Performance — Does it do its primary job well, consistently, and over time?
- Value for money — Is the price justified by the features, build quality, and performance?
- Ease of use — Can a typical buyer set it up and use it without frustration?
- Build quality & durability — Is it built to last? What do long-term owners report?
- Support & warranty — Is the manufacturer responsive? Is the warranty meaningful?
Scores are not permanent. We update them when significant new user data emerges, when a manufacturer releases a material update, or when a major price change affects the value assessment.
US vs. Canadian Reviews
Where a product’s pricing, availability, or relevant regulations differ significantly between the US and Canadian markets, we publish a separate Canadian review. Canadian reviews are independently researched using Canadian retailer data and Amazon.ca pricing, and reflect any differences in safety certifications, warranty law, or provincial consumer protection requirements.
We do not simply copy a US review and change the currency. If the Canadian market version of a product has a different user experience or value proposition, our Canadian review reflects that.
Update Policy
Product reviews have a shelf life. We revisit published reviews when:
- A significant volume of new user data emerges that changes the reliability picture
- The manufacturer releases a new version or a material update
- The product’s price changes enough to affect the value assessment
- A reader submits a credible correction or flags a factual error
The “Last updated” date on every review reflects when the content was last generated or substantively edited. It does not indicate ongoing monitoring. Prices and availability should be verified independently before purchasing.
How We Use AI
AI assists our research — it does not replace our editors. We use AI to process and summarise large volumes of user review data, cross-reference specifications across multiple sources, and identify research gaps that require deeper investigation.
AI drafts the full review structure from our research data. A human editor reviews the draft for accuracy, tone, and completeness before publication — but the primary text is AI-generated and edited, not written from scratch by a human author. We think readers deserve to know this.
We include an editorial notice at the top of every review disclosing our use of AI in the research process. We believe this transparency is a minimum standard for responsible AI-assisted publishing.
Commercial Independence
We earn revenue through affiliate commissions. This is disclosed on every review page and on our Affiliate Disclosure page. Affiliate revenue does not influence our ratings, recommendations, or which products we choose to review. We do not accept paid placements, sponsored rankings, or manufacturer payments of any kind.
