Apple HomePod mini 2: First Look at What’s Confirmed (2026)

Apple HomePod mini 2 smart speakers in pink, green, blue, white and midnight
★ Bottom Line

The HomePod mini 2 is for Canadian Apple homes that want a small smart speaker and home hub with newer insides: an S10 chip, Wi-Fi 6E and four-speaker surround with the new Apple TV 4K. The trade-off is that Siri AI, its headline feature, comes in a later update with no date, listed in English for Canada, and nothing about its sound has been independently tested yet.

Pros

  • S10 chip replaces the 2020 model's S5
  • Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 6
  • Four-speaker surround with the new Apple TV 4K
  • Works as a speaker for Wi-Fi 6E Macs

Cons

  • Siri AI comes later; only English announced for Canada
  • Can't stereo-pair with the 2020 mini
  • Same listed driver and radiators as the 2020 mini
  • No independent sound tests yet

Overview

The Apple HomePod mini 2 isn’t in stores yet, so this is a pre-release preview built from Apple’s October 13 announcement, its spec sheet and the first launch coverage, not a finished buying verdict. Pre-orders are open now through Apple Canada at $199 CAD, and Apple says store availability begins Friday, October 30.

It is the first update to the HomePod mini since the original arrived in 2020, and from the outside it looks the same apart from new colors, with pink and green joining blue, white and midnight. The other changes are inside and in software: an S10 chip in place of the old S5, faster wireless, four-speaker surround with the new Apple TV 4K, a light show on top called Sound Glow, and Siri AI, which Apple says comes in a future software update rather than at launch.

HomePod mini 2 Sound and Surround

The speaker hardware on Apple’s two spec sheets is word for word the same: one full-range driver, two passive radiators and a waveguide that spreads sound in a circle. With the listed speaker hardware unchanged, Apple credits the S10 chip with any gains: it says the chip analyzes music in real time to tune dynamic range, loudness and acoustic performance. No one has measured that yet, so treat better sound as Apple’s claim until reviews arrive.

The bigger audio change is surround. Four HomePod mini 2 speakers, or HomePod (2nd generation) speakers, in matching front and rear pairs can work with the new Apple TV 4K (4th generation), which recognizes where each speaker sits and calibrates timing and levels to the room. Engadget heard it at Apple’s event and said a set of four minis “holds its own,” while two full-size HomePods up front with minis at the back gave more bass. It also noted that buying four speakers for one living room “seems like a rare scenario.” At $199 CAD each, four minis come to $796 CAD before tax.

One catch for current owners: Apple’s stereo pairing needs two speakers of the same model and generation, so a HomePod mini 2 can’t be stereo-paired with a 2020 mini. Both can still play together in multiroom audio over AirPlay.

HomePod mini 2 Siri AI and Smart Home

Siri AI is the feature Apple leads with, and it isn’t there on day one. Apple says it arrives in a future software update and hasn’t given a date. When it does arrive, whoever owns the home in Apple’s Home app must have an iPhone or iPad that supports Apple Intelligence, and personal requests, like finding a song a friend sent in Messages, need such a device paired. Apple says the speaker can recognize up to six voices in a household. For Canadian homes, Apple’s announcement lists Siri AI in English for Canada and says nothing about French, which matters in Quebec and other French-speaking households. Its fine print also says some server-based Apple Intelligence features have daily usage limits, with expanded access “available for a fee in the future.”

The smart home side carries over from the original. It works as a home hub, supports Thread accessories that use HomeKit or Matter, runs automations and scenes, and can listen for smoke and carbon monoxide alarm sounds and send an alert to your iPhone. Apple warns that Sound Recognition “should not be relied upon” in emergencies, so it adds to a working alarm rather than replacing one.

HomePod mini 2 Sound Glow and Mac Speaker Mode

Beyond the colors, the most visible change is on top. With Sound Glow, pick a soundscape such as rain and the panel plays a matching animation; with music, it pulses to the bass and treble in colors drawn from the album art. How much that adds depends on where the speaker sits: Engadget’s reviewer, who rarely sits near or looks at their HomePods, wasn’t sure how often they would see it.

The new mini can also act as a Mac’s speaker, on any Mac with Wi-Fi 6E or later, alone or as a stereo pair. Engadget listened to a pair with an iMac and found it an “obvious upgrade” over the built-in speakers, and suggested two minis for a desk is a more likely buy than four for a living room. In Canada, that pair costs $398 CAD at Apple’s price.

Is the Apple HomePod mini 2 Worth Waiting For?

If you own a 2020 mini, there’s no rush: what you’d get today is the S10 chip, newer Wi-Fi, Sound Glow, Mac speaker mode and surround (which needs the new Apple TV 4K and four speakers), and a new mini won’t stereo-pair with your old one, so a matched pair means buying two.

Waiting makes most sense for anyone choosing the HomePod mini 2 mainly for sound. Its listed driver layout is unchanged, so once reviews arrive, look for side-by-side listening against the original, a check on how three microphones pick up voices across a noisy room compared with the old four, and Apple’s usage terms for Siri AI. If you’re building a four-speaker surround setup around the new Apple TV 4K, Engadget’s event demo was encouraging, but it’s a big outlay to commit before full reviews.
