Overview

The Dell XPS Googlebook is only starting to reach shoppers, so this is a pre-release preview built from Dell’s own September 21 announcement and named outlet coverage, not a finished buying verdict. Dell says it is on sale through Best Buy and Google Stores, with Dell.com to follow in October. For Canadian shoppers, Chrome Unboxed reports an October 5 launch for markets outside the US, Canada included, but Dell’s announcement gave no Canadian-dollar price.

It is the first XPS laptop built around Google’s Gemini Intelligence. Dell’s Konstantin Tuv said “Google and Android users deserve a premium laptop built specifically for them.” The hardware pitch is a thin aluminum 13-inch laptop with a 2.5K touchscreen and a Snapdragon X Elite chip.

Dell XPS Googlebook Display and Design

Dell describes a 2.5K InfinityEdge touch display covering 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, with a refresh rate that adjusts between 30Hz and 120Hz. Engadget lists the screen at 13.4 inches and said the small bezels make the laptop “feel even smaller than the average laptop with a 13-inch screen.”

At 12.7mm, Engadget called it the thinnest and smallest of the five Googlebooks it tried at the announcement, and the most distinctive. Dell’s own figure is 2.2 lb in a solid aluminum chassis. Chrome Unboxed lists the same weight as 0.99 kg but gives the thickness as 12.5mm, so treat that last half millimetre as unsettled until someone puts a caliper on a retail unit.

Dell XPS Googlebook Performance and Gemini Intelligence

The processor is a Snapdragon X Elite, and Chrome Unboxed reports a Hexagon NPU rated at 45+ TOPS for on-device AI work. Dell offers up to 32GB of LPDDR5X memory and SSDs up to 1TB, and Chrome Unboxed says the entry configuration starts at 16GB and 512GB. Dell also lists a dual-fan cooling system, so fan noise is worth checking once reviews arrive.

The software side comes from Google. Gemini Intelligence sits at the center of the Googlebook OS, according to Dell’s announcement, and how useful it is day to day is something an announcement can’t answer. The announcement coverage we read doesn’t say how the platform behaves offline or how wide its app support is.

Dell XPS Googlebook Battery, Ports and Keyboard

Dell rates the battery at up to 16 hours of Netflix streaming on one charge. Neoteo reports that Google advertises up to 18 hours of web browsing, and Chrome Unboxed says it cruises “past 14 hours of continuous use.” Those are manufacturer claims under their own test conditions, and the battery capacity in watt-hours hasn’t been published.

Connectivity is thin. Dell lists two USB Type-C 3.2 ports at 10Gbps, each with DisplayPort 1.4 and Power Delivery, and the list Dell gives stops there. Engadget found the keyboard “shallower than any other Googlebook,” though it “still feels solid and reliable,” and called the trackpad “quite large and responsive for such a compact computer.”

Is the Dell XPS Googlebook Worth Waiting For?

Pricing is the clearest open question. Dell lists a starting price of $999, while Engadget reports a regular starting price of $1,199 with $999 as the Best Buy price. Which configuration each figure covers isn’t spelled out, so the price to plan around isn’t settled. Both figures are US dollars and no Canadian price has been confirmed, so watch for the CAD number before comparing it with Canadian-market Windows on Arm laptops and Chromebook Plus models. Wait for hands-on reviews before committing.

Once independent testing appears, check three things against Dell’s numbers: whether the 16-hour battery claim holds with the screen at normal brightness, how the Snapdragon X Elite handles the apps you rely on, and whether the shallow keyboard suits long typing sessions. Acer’s Googlebook 14 First Look covers the convertible alternative on the same platform.
