Winix 5510 Review: Strong Cleaning, Loud at Full Speed

Winix 5510 air purifier with PlasmaWave technology
★ Bottom Line

The Winix 5510 is a strong value for Canadian living rooms and large bedrooms: in two independent tests its top-speed cleaning kept pace with the best mid-size purifiers, and it pairs pellet carbon with Wi-Fi app control. By Health Canada's wildfire-smoke sizing guidance its smoke CADR suits a large room, and its low speeds are quiet enough for a bedroom. The trade-offs are a loud top speed and an auto mode that reacts to odors rather than dust or pollen.

Pros

  • Top-speed cleaning on par with the best mid-size purifiers tested
  • Pelleted carbon filter for odors and smoke
  • Quiet low speeds with automatic sleep mode
  • Wi-Fi app and Alexa control
  • More compact than the 5500-2 it replaces

Cons

  • Loud at top speed
  • Auto mode senses odors, not dust or pollen
  • App is basic next to Levoit's
  • Cleaning drops sharply at quiet speeds

Overview

Winix’s 5500-2 was one of the most popular mid-size air purifiers around, and the 5510 is the model that replaced it. The recipe is familiar: a washable pre-filter, a carbon stage made of real activated-carbon pellets, and a True HEPA filter, now in a slimmer, better-looking cabinet with Wi-Fi control through the Winix Smart app. AHAM verifies it for rooms up to 392 square feet, so this is a machine for a living room, open kitchen or big bedroom rather than a desk.

On Amazon.ca it costs less than the Levoit Core 400S-P and Blueair Blue Pure 311i Max, and its smoke CADR of 253 cubic feet per minute is higher than what Coway lists for the Airmega AP-1512HH and Levoit for the Core 400S-P. Winix also lists a Canadian office in Pitt Meadows, B.C. Two independent labs that ran it at full power found its cleaning on par with the best mid-size machines they have measured. The compromises are just as consistent from test to test: the top fan speed is loud, and auto mode follows odors and gases rather than dust or pollen.

Winix 5510 Air Cleaning Performance

HouseFresh filled its 728-cubic-foot test room with incense smoke and ran the 5510 at top speed with PlasmaWave on: it took 24 minutes to bring PM1 particles to zero, which HouseFresh worked out as a top-speed CADR of about 249 cfm, close to Winix’s own rating. Air Purifier First ran it at maximum for an hour in a 320-square-foot room and saw PM2.5 fall from 104.9 to 4.7 µg/m³, a 96% improvement that matched its result for the Coway AP-1512HH.

The weaker number is how much of that power you get at a volume you’d happily live with. HouseFresh estimated its cleaning rate at 125 cfm on the fastest setting that stays under 45 dBA, about half the top-speed figure, and at speed 2 it needed 47 minutes to clear the same room. HouseFresh also timed it at just one minute behind the outgoing 5500-2 at full power, and blamed the extra fan noise on the 5510’s smaller body and filters.

How Loud the 5510 Gets, From Sleep Mode to Top Speed

Winix lists 23.5 dB on the slowest setting. Independent meters read higher, partly because of room noise: HouseFresh measured 35.2 dBA in sleep mode against a 35 dBA background, while Air Purifier First recorded 40.2 dBA. Either way, the low settings are quiet enough for a bedroom, and a light sensor drops the unit into sleep mode when the room goes dark, dimming its LEDs and slowing the fan, then returns it to auto mode when the lights come back on. Air Purifier First wished that light sensor could be switched off.

Top speed is a different story. Air Purifier First measured 65.7 dBA there. HouseFresh’s meter read 67.2 dBA. Both labs found it louder than some rivals with similar cleaning power. In practice, top speed is a burst setting for clearing the air after cooking or on a smoky day, and the lower speeds are where it will spend most of its time.

Auto Mode, Sensors and the Winix Smart App

Auto mode takes its cue from a gas sensor that picks up odors, not from a particle counter. Air Purifier First notes that it reacts quickly to cooking smells but stays on its lowest speed when pollen is high, because the sensor can’t detect pollen. That matters if allergies are the reason you’re buying: rather than leave it on auto, set a fixed speed or a schedule. By contrast, Coway says the AP-1512HH’s auto mode follows a dust sensor, and Levoit uses a laser dust sensor in the Core 400S-P. A colored LED on the front shifts from blue to red as the sensor’s reading worsens.

The app connects over Wi-Fi on iPhone and Android, and testers found it easy to use. It covers remote control and filter status, and Air Purifier First found basic schedules but missed the advanced scheduling Levoit offers. Next to Levoit’s VeSync app it is plain, with fewer features and less air-quality detail. Winix also lists Alexa support for voice control.

Filters, PlasmaWave and Running Costs

The 5510 uses Winix’s Filter Q set, which fits only the 5510 and its sibling 5520 and is smaller than the filters in the 5500-2. The carbon and HEPA layers come as separate pieces, each rated for 12 months, and the mesh pre-filter washes clean, which helps with pet hair. Winix told HouseFresh that the carbon filter holds 226 grams of carbon, the same as the 5500-2’s, and HouseFresh pointed out that if the carbon saturates first you can pull it and keep running on the HEPA until a new set arrives.

Power draw is modest: both test labs measured roughly 53 W at top speed and under 5 W at speed 1, so at the low speeds it usually runs on, the yearly filter set costs far more than the electricity. PlasmaWave, Winix’s bipolar ionizer, is on by default and has its own button on the control panel to switch it off. Health Canada’s wildfire-smoke guidance points to the AHAM and California Air Resources Board certification programs when choosing an air cleaner, and the 5510 carries both; the same guidance advises against ozone generators in homes. Winix’s own 30 m³ chamber test puts the 5510’s 8-hour average ozone output at 0.22 ppbv. Winix lists a two-year warranty.

How Does It Stack Up Against the Competition?

The 5510’s closest rivals are other purifiers rated for roughly 350 to 450 square feet; this table uses each maker’s own figures.

Is the Winix 5510 Worth It?

Buy it for a living room, open kitchen or large bedroom where it will mostly hum along on a low speed, with bursts at full power for cooking smoke or a wildfire-smoke day. Health Canada’s wildfire-smoke guidance sizes a portable air cleaner so its smoke CADR filters at least two to three times the room’s volume every hour. At 253 cfm, that works out to roughly 630 square feet with 8-foot ceilings at three air changes an hour, well beyond the 392 square feet AHAM verifies at the stricter 4.8 changes. Add a real pellet carbon bed and app control, and it is a strong value in Canada.

Look elsewhere if pollen or dust allergies are the main reason you’re buying and you want auto mode to handle them: the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH and Levoit Core 400S-P both run auto mode from dust sensors. If you need strong cleaning at a quiet volume, the Blueair Blue Pure 311i Max lists a higher smoke CADR and a 50 dB top speed for more money, and HouseFresh points sound-sensitive buyers to Winix’s own T810, which it found cleans better at quiet speeds.
