Otherwise, the AirPods 5 are the value buy. They rest in the outer ear with no tips, still turn down a bus or an open office, and share most of Apple’s everyday iPhone features at a much lower price.
Sealed Fit
For iPhone owners who want flights, trains and offices to go quiet, with longer listening per charge.
Open Fit
For iPhone owners who want a commute or an office turned down, with Apple’s everyday features for less.
AirPods Pro 3 vs AirPods 5 comes down to one physical difference: the Pro 3 seal the ear canal with silicone tips, and the AirPods 5 rest in the outer ear with none. That seal drives the biggest difference: how much noise each one blocks. Below, the two are compared on the five questions that split buyers: noise, fit, battery, sound and the Pro 3’s health features.

What They Have in Common
Both run on Apple’s H2 chip over Bluetooth 5.3, and both carry the same everyday iPhone features: a Transparency mode that sounds natural, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Personalized Spatial Audio, and Live Translation and hands-free Siri AI (still a beta) with an Apple Intelligence iPhone. In Canada, Siri AI arrived in English, with French promised for October 2026. Since iOS 27, both also have a basic three-band custom EQ. Both are rated IP57, support neither LDAC nor aptX, give about an hour of listening from five minutes in the case, and come without a charging cable. On an Android phone, both work as plain Bluetooth earbuds and lose most of their extras.
How Much Quiet Do You Need?
This is the Pro 3’s clearest win. SoundGuys measured an average 90% cut in how loud outside noise seemed through the Pro 3, among the best it has recorded in earbuds, against 59% for the AirPods 5, whose cancelling barely touches sound below 500 Hz, the range of engine and aircraft rumble. Apple’s own claim is that the Pro 3 cancel up to three times as much. On planes, AppleInsider, switching between the two on several flights, found the AirPods 5 “offered comparable ANC, though AirPods Pro 3 performed better overall”. Flight results for the AirPods 5 alone are split: Gizmodo’s reviewer slept on a cross-country flight with the jet engines mostly quieted, while BGR, whose reviewer uses a pair of Pro 3 as earplugs on planes, could hear the engines all flight long.
The AirPods 5 are still the strongest open-fit cancelling testers had tried. Steady background noise such as air conditioning and road hum gets the biggest cut in most tests, though SoundGuys still heard HVAC whine; voices are turned down rather than removed, and car horns still get through.
Pick the AirPods Pro 3 if you fly often, ride loud trains or want an open office to go quiet. The AirPods 5 are enough if you want a bus or a busy street turned down and still like hearing what’s around you.
Can You Wear Ear Tips for Hours?
Only your ears can settle this one. The Pro 3 ship with five sizes of silicone tips with foam inside, down to a new XXS, and for many ears the newer shape sits well: TechRadar’s reviewer, for whom no earlier AirPods had stayed put, found they held securely even with a shake of the head. Not everyone agrees: after three months, Tom’s Guide’s long-term reviewer found the reshaped buds and deeper-reaching tips less comfortable than the Pro 2, whichever tip size they tried, and a colleague disliked the fit enough to stay with the Pro 2.
The AirPods 5 leave the ear canal open and weigh 4.3 g a bud against the Pro 3’s 5.55 g, but with no tips to swap, the fit can’t be adjusted, and SoundGuys’ tester felt the housing rub after half an hour. How they sit also shapes the sound: in SoundGuys’ words, “bass thins out fast if the fit isn’t right”.
Pick the AirPods 5 if silicone tips have always bothered you. If you’re unsure, try the Pro 3 on before you commit.
How Long Do You Listen Between Charges?
On Apple’s ratings, the Pro 3 run up to 8 hours a charge with cancelling on, twice the AirPods 5’s 4, and 24 hours with the case against 20. SoundGuys’ playback test ran the Pro 3 for 8 hours 42 minutes, while TechRadar’s reviewer saw around 5.5 hours in everyday use. No review we read had yet run the standard AirPods 5 down.
The Pro 3 case also charges more ways: on a MagSafe or Qi pad, an Apple Watch charger or USB-C, while the standard AirPods 5 case takes USB-C only. Pad charging comes back with the Wireless Charging Case version of the AirPods 5, which also gets volume swipes and an extra hour per charge on Apple’s figures, for about $20 more on Amazon in October 2026about $34 CAD more on Amazon.ca in October 2026.
Pick the AirPods Pro 3 if you listen for long stretches, on flights or through a working day, without many chances to put the buds back in the case.
Which Sounds Better for Music and Calls?
The Pro 3 have the edge for music, and testers who compared the two agree on that. In MacRumors’ listening, the Pro 3 kept the lower mids clearer, where the AirPods 5 turned muddy, and Tom’s Guide preferred the Pro 3 on a layered electronic track while still calling the AirPods 5 “some of the best-sounding” earbuds in their price class.
Calls are closer. Tom’s Guide’s tester came through clearly to callers on both pairs, and TechGearLab scored the Pro 3’s calls 9.6 out of 10, the top call score in its lineup.
Pick the AirPods Pro 3 if music quality comes first. For calls, either pair does the job.
Do You Want Heart-Rate and Hearing Features?
The Pro 3 alone can read your pulse: their sensor covers around 50 workout types with only the earbuds and an iPhone, and iOS 27’s GymKit support sends that reading to compatible treadmills and exercise bikes. They also carry Apple’s hearing health features: Hearing Protection, which lets the buds act as earplugs in loud places (Apple says it isn’t suitable for sustained sounds above 110 dBA or sudden blasts such as fireworks), plus Hearing Test and a Hearing Aid feature for adults who perceive their hearing loss as mild to moderate. Canadian buyers get Hearing Protection only for now (see the FAQ). The Pro 3 case adds an Ultra Wideband chip for Precision Finding with an iPhone. The standard AirPods 5 have none of these.
Pick the AirPods Pro 3 if you’d use workout heart rate without a watch, or the hearing features.
Consider Instead
Both pairs are built around the iPhone, so neither suits an Android phone, where they lose most of what sets them apart. For Android owners who want top-tier cancelling, the Sony WF-1000XM6 stream over LDAC and lasted 9 hours 41 minutes in SoundGuys’ battery test (our Sony WF-1000XM6 reviewour Sony WF-1000XM6 review). For less, the Nothing Ear (3a) add LDAC and an 8-band EQ, with silicone tips.
Both Are Worth Buying: The Pro 3 for Quiet, the AirPods 5 for Value
The Pro 3’s higher price buys three things: the quiet that makes a flight or a long train ride easier, longer listening between charges, and heart-rate and hearing features. If you’d use them most weeks, they’re worth paying for. If your listening is mostly a commute or an office day with the case close by, the AirPods 5 keep the everyday features and the natural Transparency mode for far less. MacRumors and BGR reach the same call: both point most buyers to the AirPods 5 (MacRumors to the Wireless Charging Case version) and the Pro 3 to those who put noise cancelling first.
Which to buy
Buy the AirPods Pro 3 if you want the most quiet, the longer battery or the health features.
Buy the AirPods 5 if you want open-fit noise cancelling at the lower price.

How We Compared
We compared the two on the questions that split buyers choosing between them: noise, fit, battery, sound and calls, and health features. The facts about each pair come from the research behind our two reviews: Apple’s specification and feature pages, plus independent lab and editorial tests from outlets including SoundGuys, TechGearLab, TechRadar, What Hi-Fi, Tom’s Guide, AppleInsider and BGR. Side-by-side comparisons from MacRumors, Tom’s Guide and 9to5Mac cover how the two differ directly. We haven’t tested either pair ourselves; the scores are those of our reviews.
