The short answer

Upgrade to the AirPods 5 if you’d like a bus, a train or an open office to sound calmer. You keep the tipless fit you’re used to and gain noise cancelling that testers rank first among open earbuds, along with an IP57 dust and water rating. If your AirPods 3 still last through your day and you mostly listen at home or on walks, keep them for now.

This AirPods 5 vs AirPods 3 comparison is for people who already own the older pair. Apple discontinued the AirPods 3 in September 2024, when the AirPods 4 arrived, and the AirPods 5 took over from the AirPods 4 in September 2026. Both generations keep the open, tipless design, so the upgrade comes down to four things: whether you want noise cancelling, how much battery your pair has left, how your ears take a slightly different shape, and which newer iPhone features you’d use.

What They Have in Common

Both are open earbuds without tips: each bud rests in the outer ear instead of sealing the ear canal, and the buds weigh almost exactly the same. Both offer Adaptive EQ and Spatial Audio with head tracking, so a film’s sound seems to stay with the screen when you look away. Both pair quickly with an iPhone and switch on their own between the Apple devices on your account, and five minutes in either case gives about an hour of listening. On an Android phone, both lose most of their extras and work as plain Bluetooth earbuds.

How Much Quieter Will Your Commute Get?

This is the main reason to upgrade. The AirPods 3 have no noise control at all, neither cancelling nor a Transparency mode, and in lab measurements most outside noise passed straight through them, apart from a little at the highest frequencies. The AirPods 5 cancel noise without a seal, and testers rated it the best cancelling they had found in open earbuds. SoundGuys measured an average 59% drop in how loud outside noise seemed, with most of the effect between about 1 kHz and 9 kHz; its results show little reduction under 500 Hz, where engine noise sits. Testers who flew with them split: Gizmodo’s reviewer slept through most of the engine noise on a cross-country flight, while BGR heard the engines for the whole flight.

You also gain a Transparency mode so natural that testers could barely tell the buds were in, Adaptive Audio, which blends cancelling and Transparency as your surroundings change, and Conversation Awareness, which turns your music down when you start talking.

Upgrade if you listen on buses and trains, in an open office or on busy streets and want the background turned down. Keep your AirPods 3 if you mostly listen at home or want to hear traffic on walks, which their open design already lets you do.

Will the Battery Still Last Your Day?

Battery is where the older pair can come out ahead. On Apple’s figures, a charge lasts six hours on the AirPods 3 (30 in total with the case), and every independent rundown we found went past that: SoundGuys measured 6 hours 21 minutes, HeadphonesAddict 6 hours 14 minutes and TechGearLab 7 hours 10 minutes. The standard AirPods 5 get four hours a charge from Apple with cancelling switched on, six with it off, and 20 in total with the case and cancelling on. No review we read had yet run the standard AirPods 5 down.

Those AirPods 3 results came from new pairs. Every charge cycle wears a battery a little, so a pair bought in 2021 or 2022 will likely fall short of them by now, and Apple’s warranty doesn’t cover batteries worn down by normal use.

Keep your AirPods 3 if they still cover your longest listening stretch; on Apple’s ratings they run longer per charge than the AirPods 5 with cancelling on. Upgrade if your pair now needs the case before your commute or your working morning is over.

Will the New Shape Fit Your Ears Better?

The AirPods 5 use the AirPods 4’s bud unchanged, in shape and in its 4.3 g weight, and that shape differs from the AirPods 3’s. What Hi-Fi, comparing the AirPods 4 with the AirPods 3, found the tapered buds “nestle more securely in our ears than the AirPods 3 do”. Neither generation has tips to swap, though, so the fit can’t be tuned: many AirPods 5 testers wore them for hours without discomfort, though SoundGuys’ tester felt the housing rub after half an hour, and some didn’t trust them on runs.

The build is tougher too. The AirPods 5 and their case are rated IP57, against the AirPods 3’s IPX4, so they’re protected against dust and a brief dunk in water rather than only splashes.

Even: decide on how your AirPods 3 sit today. If they work loose or ache, the newer shape is worth trying, in a store if you can, since open designs like these suit some ears and not others; if they’re comfortable, fit alone isn’t a reason to switch.

Will Music and Calls Sound Better?

Inside, the AirPods 5 keep the AirPods 4’s driver and amplifier, in a new multiport acoustic design. Against the AirPods 3, What Hi-Fi heard the AirPods 4 add weight to the bass and bring out more detail, and its verdict on the switch was blunt: “it’s difficult to go back to the AirPods 3 after you’ve heard the AirPods 4”. AirPods 5 testers found them full-sounding for open earbuds, with more bass than the style usually manages, though they disagreed on how much the new pair improves on the AirPods 4 itself.

For calls, the AirPods 5 add Voice Isolation, processing that cuts wind and other sound around you from your voice; the AirPods 3 lack it. Their microphones aren’t poor: TechGearLab scored them about average for its lineup in its noisy subway and office tests.

Upgrade if you want fuller sound from an open design or take a lot of calls outside.

What Changes for Charging and iPhone Features?

The standard AirPods 5 case charges over USB-C only, and no cable comes in the box. If your AirPods 3 have the MagSafe case and you top them up on a pad, the standard model takes that away. The step-up AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case put pad charging back (Qi pads and Apple Watch chargers), with a stem you swipe for volume and an extra hour per charge on Apple’s rating, for about $20 more on Amazon in October 2026about $34 more on Amazon.ca in October 2026. Owners of the Lightning-only case already charge by cable, so for them only the connector changes.

The software gap is wider. Live Translation works on the AirPods 5 and not on the AirPods 3, and with an Apple Intelligence iPhone the AirPods 5 also get hands-free Siri AI, still a beta. In Canada, Apple lists French (France) among Live Translation’s languages, and Apple said Siri AI would add French in October 2026.

Upgrade if you’d use Live Translation or the new Siri; if you charge on a pad, make it the Wireless Charging Case model.

Consider Instead

Both pairs leave the ear open, so neither suits someone who wants a long flight to go quiet. For that, look at the AirPods Pro 3: they seal the ear with silicone tips, which come in five sizes, Apple claims up to three times the AirPods 5’s cancelling and eight hours a charge with it on, and a heart-rate sensor tracks workouts (our AirPods Pro 3 reviewour AirPods Pro 3 review). If you’ve moved to an Android phone, where both AirPods lose most of their extras, the Nothing Ear (3a) support Google Fast Pair and LDAC streaming, with silicone tips and noise cancelling.

The AirPods 5 Are the Upgrade Worth Making for Noisy Days

For an AirPods 3 owner, the AirPods 5 keep what you chose the old pair for, the tipless fit and easy iPhone pairing, and add noise cancelling, a tougher IP57 build, Voice Isolation for calls and Apple’s newest iPhone features. Upgrade when buses, trains or offices are where you listen most, or when your old battery no longer covers your day. A comfortable pair that still lasts, used mostly in quiet places, has earned a little more time.

How We Compared

We compared the two on the questions an AirPods 3 owner faces before upgrading: noise, battery, fit, sound and calls, charging and features. The facts about each pair come from the research behind our two reviews: Apple’s specification and support pages, plus independent tests and reviews from outlets including SoundGuys, What Hi-Fi, TechGearLab, HeadphonesAddict, Tom’s Guide and Trusted Reviews. What Hi-Fi’s AirPods 4 vs AirPods 3 comparison and MacRumors’ AirPods 4 vs AirPods 5 guide connect the two generations, since the AirPods 5 share the AirPods 4’s shape and driver (in a new acoustic design). We haven’t tested either pair ourselves; the scores are those of our reviews.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a leftover new pair of AirPods 3 a good deal?
Not at the prices Amazon showed in early October 2026. Amazon.com’s own listing was out of stock after a last price above the AirPods 5’s, and the new pairs Amazon.ca still listed also cost more than the AirPods 5 there, for an older design without noise cancelling.
Is the AirPods 5 case smaller than the AirPods 3 case?
Yes, a little. Apple lists the AirPods 5 case at 50.1 mm wide and 32.3 g, against 54.4 mm and 37.91 g for the AirPods 3 case; the height and depth are almost the same.
Can you swim with AirPods 5?
No. IP57 covers a short, accidental drop into water, but Apple rates them for non-water sports and exercise, says not to charge them while wet, and notes that the resistance can weaken with normal wear.
Will AirPods 5 stay in during a run?
It depends on your ears. Tom’s Guide’s fitness editor took a pair on a 22-mile run and found they moved only with a laugh or a quick look over a shoulder, though they held less firmly than dedicated running earbuds; other testers didn’t feel secure enough to run in them.
Do I need a new iPhone to use AirPods 5?
Not for the basics: Apple only asks for an iPhone on the latest iOS. Live Translation and Siri AI are the exceptions, since both need an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence.
